Below the response from Nedbank to the call to action for runners taking part in the Soweto Marathon

As title sponsors of the Nedbank Soweto Marathon, Nedbank distances itself from the call to runners to participate in a silent protest during the 2009 event on 1 November. While Nedbank respects the right of runners to have their collective voices heard the views expressed in the Runners’ Guide Newsletter are not the views of the bank.

Over the past four years the Nedbank Soweto Marathon has seen participant numbers swell by nearly 43% and we are looking forward to another record turn-out this year. As proud supporters of “The People’s Race” and of road running in South Africa we believe that the Nedbank Soweto Marathon allows participants to experience all the warmth and history that embodies both the residents and city of Soweto. Nedbank, together with our organising partners Athletics South Africa and the City of Johannesburg remain committed to delivering yet another memorable instalment of this historic race.
