The oldest trick in the book!!
The Mail & Guardian has established that the ANC intends to show the NPA that Zuma is small fry in the arms deal saga and that it is in possession of much more damaging evidence, including documentation that allegedly implicates former president Thabo Mbeki and Cope president Mosiuoa Lekota in wrongdoing. High-profile legal teams hired by Zuma and the ANC also plan to:
- “Prove” to the NPA that Zuma had no criminal intent when he accepted gifts and money from fraud convict Schabir Shaik and can therefore not be convicted of corruption; and
- Argue that persisting with Zuma’s prosecution is not in the public interest.
The above extract from the Mail and Guardian just represents another, albeit rather “old way” of getting yourself out of trouble. The hope here is that by making threats of exposing others that perhaps these others will try and intervene to get the charges dropped or dismissed. I would hazard that this is going to be extremely unlikely in this case, the importance of getting this mattered cleared through the courts has become the priority of the judiciary and this means that that a resolution is going to come.
The part that I am struck with is: “Prove” to the NPA that Zuma had no criminal intent when he accepted gifts and money from fraud convict Schabir Shaik and can therefore not be convicted of corruption
What the heck are they saying here, I mean this is effectively an admission of guilt, you cannot expect the judge to draw anything else from this utterance. It is impossible for JZ to claim that he had no criminal intent, why in heavens name would he accept the money in the first place. Certainly the sums of money involved were not pocket change, it’s not like Schabir offered to pay for a meal or pick up the bill for parking.
I think that the best possible solution for this country, is for JZ to “spill the beans”, this is after all what we as South Africans having been asking for since the first rumblings into the arms deal began. It is time that the truth be outed, if anything if JZ is shown to be an “innocent” then this can only help his profile. Certainly it cannot do anymore damage to him as a person.
With the time running out as far as the elections, the opposition politics of this country should be hard at work, we are seeing a very real shift in the dominance of the ANC. These elections will spell the end of the two-thirds majority and therefore the advent of a truly democratic environment within the country.
