Protecting the youth against internet predators

Part of my blog is to advance things that I view as great ideas, with a South African angle. The latest great idea comes from the Film and Publication board that have just launched (yesterday) a telephone hot-line to facilitate the reporting of Internet porn as it affects children.  I have taken a bit from their press release and included a link to their site which has more details.

The Internet hot-line is an initiative of the Film and Publication Board. The Film and Publication Board was established by parliament to regulate distribution of films and publication with the aim of protecting children from exposure to inappropriate material.

The Internet hot-line is a service that affords the members of the public with an opportunity to report, online, any child pornography or sexual abuse images discovered accidentally on the Internet. This may also include child grooming activities hosted in the chat rooms.

The Internet hot-line provides and guarantees a secure and a confidential environment to members of the public when reporting child pornography (child sexual abuse images). The hot-line staff adheres to the code of ethics (which puts emphasis on confidentiality) as prescribed by National and International Bodies such as the International Association of Internet Hot-lines.

The primary purpose of the Internet Hot-line is to prevent distribution of child pornography (child sexual abuse images) when detected through the Internet.

I think that this is a great idea and we need to distribute this as widely as possible to keep our kids safe.
