Ferrari throw first stone in terms of cost cutting
As you will no doubt know, Ferrari have come out to say that they will leave Formula One if the FIA decide that “in the interest of the sport” there will be standard engine used by everyone. Clearly this is a move to try to unsettle the FIA, who have responded saying that simply this is one of three options that they presented to the teams to consider.
I must say that I do not think a standard engine is a solution to cost cutting, my contention is that this is supposed to be the pinnacle of racing and having a standard engine for all simply turns it into A1 racing.
I support the need to look at costs so I guess this only leaves the other options of teams with the cash, somehow supporting the teams without cash through subsidised engines. This probably coupled with the requirement to make the engines last longer.
It will be interesting to watch how this pans out. If Mclaren, BMW and Toyota join Ferrari’s stance then this should close out this option and force a focus on the other solutions.
