The Running Commentary

Dear Younger Me

Dear Younger Me

As many of you know I am a great fan MercyMe. It is not unusual to have them on repeat, with my other favourites Casting Crowns. In the past few weeks, their song “Dear Younger Me”, has come up a few times. It was one of those songs that I listened to, but never really fathomed the lyrics of.

In the past few weeks though the lyrics have begun to strike a chord with me. As one of those folks with a very active mind, I often drift back in time, wondering what life may have turned out to be had I made different choices. In wondering I imagine how scenarios would have played out, what the likely outcome would have been. I live, for a moment in mind, that different life.

The Truth

As the lyrics have deepened within me though, I realise the truth of the lies that this imaginings bring. I also realise how far I am removed from the ultimate truth during these times. Sure, I have regrets over decisions, I have lived experiences and consequences of these, but I have a truth that is deeper than this.

The biggest realisation for me, over these past weeks, is that I have an amazing opportunity, to share with those that are younger than me. I get to talk to people most days, many of them younger than me, many of them eager to for input and advice. They are looking for a sounding board, an opportunity to “check-in” with their younger selves before they in fact know it.

Don’t Hold Back

So, if you want to turn back the clock and get rid of guilt, remember that this is already accomplished for you. You have another opportunity ahead of you; share your experiences, not necessarily as regrets, with those that could benefit from them. Don’t hold back, wherever you are, you can help the “Dear Younger Me’s” around you.
